Sonics' Employees Earn Golden Shovel at Castles in the Sand

05/12/2014

Employees win People’s Choice Award at Homes with Hope’s 13th annual event. It’s not in their job description, but some of Sonics’ best and brightest spent hours digging in the sand under the hot sun at Compo Beach in Westport to participate in the Homes with Hope 13th annual Castles in the Sand fundraising event. For their efforts in creating their sand sculpture, Fudgy the Whale (complete with water–spouting blowhole), participants Jana Collar, John Corsi, his son, John S. Corsi, Doreen Madore, and Bruce Green were rewarded with a People’s Choice Golden Shovel award. Homes with Hope is a nonprofit agency based in Westport dedicated to supporting the homeless and those at risk of homelessness by providing food, safe emergency shelter, and permanent supportive housing. In fact, they house more than 60 homeless people each night in Westport and Norwalk, and also provide a Community Kitchen and Food Pantry. Sonics supports their mission and Vice President Lauren Soloff is on the Board of Directors. While the sand sculptors did not use any of Sonics’ ultrasonic equipment in their task, they did prepare by using the company’s 3-D printer to produce a 3-dimensional solid model of the whale they planned to sculpt out of sand. It appears that the actual end-result product varied a little from the original plastic prototype, but as all manufacturers know, real-world testing often results in some degree of re-design! In any event, a good time was had by all to benefit a very worthy cause.
